MIL-STD-810: The Defence Computing Standard

MIL-STD-810 is the US Department of Defense environmental engineering test standard, covering temperature, altitude, vibration, shock, rain, humidity, salt fog, sand, and dust. Industrial computers for defence applications are tested to these methods and rated accordingly. For Indian defence procurement, equivalent standards under MIL-STD-810 and DRDO specifications apply.

Key Applications

  • Armoured vehicle systems, mission computers, navigation displays, and turret control systems requiring conduction cooling (no fans) and MIL-STD-1275 28V power input
  • Shipborne electronics, C4ISR systems requiring shock isolation and salt air resistance
  • Ground command stations, portable or fixed command post computers requiring wide-temperature operation
  • Radar and signal processing, high-performance computing for signal processing with PCIe GPU expansion
  • Drone and UAV ground control, compact, lightweight embedded computing for GCS systems

Conduction Cooling for Vehicle Applications

Vehicle-mounted computers cannot use convection cooling (fans) because there is no ambient airflow inside armoured hulls. Conduction-cooled designs transfer heat directly from the processor to the chassis wall, which acts as a heat spreader to the vehicle body. Avalue rugged computing platforms available from TSL Automation support conduction-cooled configurations for vehicle integration projects.

Często zadawane pytania

Defence computing hardware must typically meet MIL-STD-810G/H for environmental testing (shock, vibration, temperature, humidity, altitude), MIL-STD-461 for electromagnetic compatibility, and STANAG specifications for NATO interoperability. For airborne and naval applications, DO-160G (avionics) and MIL-S-901D (shock) may apply. Certifications required depend on the specific platform and deployment environment.
Military-suitable industrial PCs require MIL-STD-810 shock and vibration certification, wide operating temperature (-40°C to +70°C or better), MIL-STD-461 EMC compliance, rugged sealed aluminium or steel enclosures, conduction cooling (no fans) for silent operation, and long-lifecycle components with extended availability guarantees to support 10 do 20 year platform lifecycles.
Conduction cooling transfers heat from the processor through a thermal interface to the enclosure walls rather than using fans. This eliminates fan noise (important for submarine and covert applications), removes moving parts (increasing reliability and MTBF), and prevents dust and moisture ingress. Conduction-cooled computers are sealed and rated for operation in the most challenging environments.
Military computing systems typically require MIL-spec connectors (MIL-DTL-38999 circular connectors) rather than commercial USB/RJ45, MIL-STD-1553 for avionics data bus, RS-422/485 for serial communication, ARINC 429 for aircraft applications, fibre optic Ethernet for EMC-sensitive environments, and GPIO for discrete signal interfacing to defence equipment.
TSL Automation Solutions supplies rugged industrial computing hardware from Avalue that meets military environmental specifications, including MIL-STD-810G certified systems, wide-temperature computers, and conduction-cooled embedded platforms.
