Mining Environment Challenges

Mining operations, whether underground coal, open-cast iron ore, or deep-level gold, subject industrial computing equipment to the most extreme conditions in any industry:

Hardware Requirements

Mining industrial PCs must achieve IP65 minimum (IP67 for wet areas), ATEX Zone 2 or Zone 1 for underground coal mines, MIL-STD-810 vibration and shock rating, and wide temperature operation. All storage must be solid-state, hard drives do not survive mine vibration. Underground mines have poor or no cellular connectivity, communication relies on leaky feeder cable networks, mesh WiFi, or fibre optic backbone. Industrial PCs for mining must support the leaky feeder RF protocols or include multiple LAN ports for hardwired underground network connectivity. Above-ground pit computers face radio interference from large haul trucks and blasting communications.
