What Is an IoT Gateway?

An IoT gateway is an edge computing device that acts as the bridge between your operational technology (OT), PLCs, sensors, drives, HMIs, and your information technology (IT) infrastructure, including cloud platforms, MES systems, and ERP databases.

IoT Gateway vs SCADA vs Edge PC

An IoT gateway is lightweight, it collects and forwards data but does not run a full SCADA runtime. A SCADA system runs on an industrial Panel PC and handles operator control, alarming, and plant-wide visualization. An edge PC can do both, running SCADA locally while also connecting to the cloud.

An IoT gateway acts as a bridge between IoT devices (sensors, PLCs, meters) and cloud or enterprise systems. It collects data from field devices via local protocols (Modbus, Zigbee, BLE, serial), processes and filters data locally, and transmits relevant data upstream via internet protocols (MQTT, HTTP/REST). This reduces the volume of data sent to the cloud and provides a local processing point for time-sensitive decisions.

Many industrial and IoT devices cannot connect to the internet directly, they use legacy protocols (Modbus RTU, RS-485 serial), lack Ethernet or WiFi, operate at very low power, or require local data buffering when internet connectivity is unavailable. Examples: averaging 100 sensor readings per second and sending 1-minute averages to the cloud; detecting anomalies locally and only sending alerts rather than raw data; running a simple ML model locally to classify equipment state without cloud round-trip latency.

IoT gateways range from small ARM-based single-board computers (Raspberry Pi-class, appropriate for prototyping), through dedicated gateway appliances (Moxa UC, Advantech WISE), to industrial fanless x86 PCs running Windows IoT or Linux for enterprise-grade deployments. For industrial automation with multiple PLC protocols and high data volumes, x86 industrial PCs provide the most software flexibility and processing capacity.
