What Is an Industrial Historian?

An industrial historian (also called a process historian or data historian) is a specialised time-series database designed to capture, compress, and store large volumes of process data from PLCs, SCADA systems, sensors, and drives. Unlike a relational database (SQL), a historian is optimised for timestamped numerical data, recording thousands of tag values every second with minimal storage footprint.

It uses compression algorithms to store millions of data points efficiently, enabling long-term trend analysis, compliance reporting, and process optimisation across months or years of plant data.

A SQL relational database stores structured records and is optimised for transactional queries, not continuous time-series data. An industrial historian is purpose-built for timestamped numerical data, using lossy or lossless compression to store years of sensor readings in a fraction of the space. Historians handle millions of tags at sub-second resolution; a SQL database would require enormous storage and slow query performance for the same data volume.

The most widely used industrial historian platforms are AVEVA PI System (formerly OSIsoft PI), Wonderware Historian (AVEVA), Inductive Automation Ignition Historian, GE Proficy Historian, and AspenTech IP.21. Open-source alternatives include InfluxDB and TimescaleDB for custom IIoT applications. The choice depends on your SCADA platform, site size, and integration requirements.
