Step 1: Choose the Right Screen Size

HMI screen size affects readability, operator ergonomics, and cost. Match screen size to viewing distance and complexity:

  • 4.3", 5.6", compact machines, limited panel space, simple on/off control
  • 7", 10", standard machine HMI; enough space for status, alarms, and basic trends
  • 12", 15", multi-axis machines, production lines; full process overview
  • 18", 21.5", large panel interfaces, SCADA-like overviews, multi-screen dashboards

Step 2: Confirm IP Rating for Your Environment

  • IP65, front panel sealed against dust and water jets; standard for most manufacturing
  • IP67, full immersion to 1m; needed for food processing and washdown areas
  • IP69K, high-pressure steam cleaning; required in dairy, beverages, and meat processing

Step 3: Verify PLC Protocol Compatibility

The HMI must speak the same protocol as your PLC. Most Cermate HMI panels support 200+ PLC drivers including:

  • Siemens S7 (MPI, Profibus, Ethernet)
  • Allen-Bradley (DF1, EtherNet/IP)
  • Mitsubishi (FX, QJ71)
  • Delta, Fatek, Unitronics, Schneider, and more
  • Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP (universal)

Step 4: Check Operating Temperature

Standard HMI panels operate 0°C, 50°C. If your environment is hotter (steel plant, outdoor summer) or colder (cold storage, outdoor winter), select a wide-temperature model rated to −20°C, 60°C or beyond.

Step 5: Consider Software and Connectivity

  • Does it support data logging to USB or SD card?
  • Can it send email alerts or SMS alarms?
  • Does it support MQTT or cloud connectivity for IIoT?
  • Is offline recipe management available?

TSL Automation's Cermate HMI range covers all screen sizes from 4.3" to 21.5" with IP65/IP67 ratings and 200+ PLC drivers. Contact us for a recommendation matched to your exact application.

Preguntas frecuentes

Key specifications to compare: screen size (4.3", 21.5" based on process complexity), PLC protocol support (confirm your PLC brand is included in the driver library), IP rating (IP65 minimum for factory floors, IP67/IP69K for wash-down), touch technology (resistive for gloves, PCAP for multi-touch), operating temperature range, processing speed (affects screen refresh and script execution), and memory capacity for alarm logging and recipe storage.
Check the HMI vendor's driver library documentation for your specific PLC model, not just the brand. Confirm the communication protocol (Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS, proprietary protocol) and the specific register addresses supported. For Cermate HMIs, the EasyBuilder Pro driver list covers 300+ PLCs and is available for download to verify before purchase.
A 4.3", 5.7" HMI is sufficient for simple start/stop, setpoint display, and basic alarm indication on a single machine. A 7", 10" panel suits multi-parameter machine interfaces with trend and recipe screens. A 10", 15" panel is needed for multi-zone or production line supervision. Larger than 15" is appropriate for plant section overview displays viewed from a distance.
Cermate HMIs use EasyBuilder Pro (EB Pro), a free drag-and-drop graphical development tool that requires no coding. Siemens HMIs use TIA Portal; Allen-Bradley uses FactoryTalk View; Mitsubishi uses GT Designer. Proprietary tools limit portability between brands, so confirm your team's software familiarity before specifying an HMI brand for a long-term installation.
Yes, TSL Automation Solutions provides free consultancy for HMI panel selection, covering screen size, PLC driver compatibility, IP rating, and programming support. We stock Cermate HMIs in Mumbai and can demonstrate EasyBuilder Pro programming. Contact our team with your PLC model and application requirements for a recommendation.
