What Is Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0, also called the Fourth Industrial Revolution, refers to the integration of cyber-physical systems, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud computing, and artificial intelligence into manufacturing. The goal is a smart factory where machines communicate, data is analysed in real time, and production is continuously optimised without human intervention.

The Four Core Technologies

  • Industrial IoT (IIoT), sensors and smart devices on every machine, feeding real-time data to central platforms
  • Edge computing, processing data locally at the machine level for real-time response, before sending summaries to the cloud
  • Cloud and big data analytics, aggregating production data across shifts, lines, and plants for optimisation insights
  • AI and machine learning, using production data to predict failures, optimise processes, and detect quality defects automatically

Industry 4.0 for Indian SME Manufacturers

Many Indian manufacturers assume Industry 4.0 requires greenfield investment. In practice, the most common starting point is retrofitting existing machines with data collection hardware:

  1. Install an IoT gateway (Avalue DIN rail PC or Box PC) on existing machines
  2. Connect to existing PLCs via Modbus or OPC UA
  3. Push data to a SCADA or cloud dashboard
  4. Use dashboards to identify OEE losses and act on them

TSL Automation Solutions provides the industrial hardware foundation for Industry 4.0, from IoT gateways and edge PCs to SCADA workstations and HMI panels. Contact us to plan your journey.

Preguntas frecuentes

Industry 4.0 is the fourth industrial revolution, the integration of cyber-physical systems, IoT, cloud computing, AI, and data analytics into manufacturing. It connects physical production equipment with digital data flows, enabling autonomous decision-making, real-time optimisation, and seamless integration between factory operations and business systems. Industry 4.0 technologies enable smart factories that are more productive, flexible, and efficient than traditionally automated plants.
The nine pillars of Industry 4.0 are: Industrial IoT (connected machines), big data and analytics (processing large production datasets), artificial intelligence (ML models for prediction and optimisation), cloud computing (scalable data storage and processing), cyber-physical systems (digital models linked to physical equipment), autonomous robots (collaborative and self-directing robots), additive manufacturing (3D printing), augmented reality (operator guidance), and cybersecurity (protecting connected systems).
Industry 4.0 hardware includes: industrial IoT sensors (vibration, temperature, pressure, power), edge computing nodes (industrial PCs, DIN rail computers, IoT gateways) for local data processing, industrial network infrastructure (managed Ethernet switches, industrial WiFi), SCADA and MES systems on industrial servers, and operator interfaces (industrial Panel PCs) for digital work instructions and production dashboards.
Indian manufacturers should start with: 1) Connect PLCs to a data collection layer (OPC UA or SCADA) to make machine data visible, 2) Implement OEE monitoring on critical machines, 3) Add remote monitoring capability for key equipment, 4) Integrate machine data with ERP for production tracking. Full Industry 4.0 transformation is a multi-year journey, start with specific high-ROI use cases rather than attempting wholesale transformation.
