What Is a MES?

A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is the software layer that manages and monitors the transformation of raw materials into finished goods on the factory floor. It sits between your ERP (SAP, Oracle) at the top and your SCADA/PLC control systems at the bottom, receiving production orders from above and real-time machine data from below.

A Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is software that manages and controls manufacturing operations on the factory floor in real time, bridging the gap between ERP (business planning) and actual production. MES handles production order management, work instructions, material tracking, quality data collection, OEE calculation, genealogy and traceability, and reporting. It provides real-time visibility into what is happening on the shop floor.
