Power Plant SCADA Requirements

Power generation SCADA systems monitor boilers, turbines, generators, and balance-of-plant systems, often across large, physically distributed facilities. SCADA workstations must operate 24/7 with no unplanned downtime; a SCADA failure in a power plant can leave operators blind to critical process conditions. Redundant servers, hot-standby workstations, and RAID storage are standard requirements.

Substation Automation

Electrical substations use IEC 61850-compliant protection relays, bay controllers, and substation gateways that communicate using GOOSE messages and MMS protocol. Industrial PCs serving as station HMI or substation automation controllers must support IEC 61850 protocol stacks and withstand the extreme EMI environment of high-voltage switchgear.

EMI Hardening for Power Environments

Power generation and substation environments produce intense electromagnetic interference, from transformer switching transients, bus faults, and high-current switching. Industrial PCs for these environments must meet IEC 61000 EMC standards for conducted and radiated immunity.
