What Is a Fieldbus?

A fieldbus is a two-way digital communication network used in industrial automation to connect field devices, PLCs, sensors, actuators, drives, and HMIs, on the factory floor. Before fieldbus, each device required its own point-to-point wiring back to the control panel. A fieldbus replaces hundreds of individual cables with a single shared network, reducing wiring costs, installation time, and fault-finding complexity.

Common Fieldbus Protocols

ProtocolTypeTypical Use
Modbus RTUSerial (RS-485)PLCs, drives, sensors, most widely used globally
PROFIBUS DPSerial (RS-485)Siemens PLC ecosystems, process automation

PROFINETIndustrial EthernetHigh-speed Siemens networks
EtherNet/IPIndustrial EthernetRockwell Automation systems
Modbus TCPEthernetModern PLC and SCADA integration

Fieldbus vs Industrial Ethernet

Traditional fieldbus networks (Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS) use RS-485 serial communication at speeds of 9.6 kbps to 12 Mbps. Industrial Ethernet-based protocols (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP) use standard Ethernet cabling at 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, enabling faster data transfer and easier integration with IT systems.

Which Protocol Is Right for Your Plant?

  • Modbus RTU/TCP, Universal choice; supported by virtually all PLC and HMI brands
  • PROFIBUS, If you are using Siemens S7 PLCs with legacy installations
  • PROFINET, New Siemens installations requiring high-speed Ethernet
  • EtherNet/IP, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ecosystems

All Cermate HMI panels from TSL Automation support Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and a wide range of PLC protocols, ensuring compatibility with whatever fieldbus your plant uses.

Questions fréquentes

A fieldbus is a digital communication network that connects field devices, sensors, actuators, valves, drives, and remote I/O, to PLCs and DCS controllers. It replaces the point-to-point wiring of traditional 4-20mA analogue signals and discrete I/O with a single cable carrying digital data to multiple devices. Common fieldbuses include PROFIBUS DP, DeviceNet, CANopen, Foundation Fieldbus, and AS-Interface.
Traditional fieldbuses (PROFIBUS, DeviceNet) use proprietary physical layers and communication protocols designed for reliability in noisy industrial environments. Industrial Ethernet (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT) uses standard Ethernet hardware with real-time industrial protocols layered on top, offering higher speed and integration with IT networks. Most new automation deployments use industrial Ethernet; fieldbuses remain in legacy installations and where proven reliability is prioritised.
PROFIBUS DP is the most widely installed fieldbus in industrial automation, particularly in Siemens PLC environments. It supports up to 126 nodes on a single segment at speeds up to 12 Mbit/s, with cycle times of 1 à 10ms. PROFIBUS is used for connecting distributed I/O stations, drives, and intelligent field devices to Siemens S7 PLCs. In new installations, PROFIBUS is increasingly replaced by PROFINET (industrial Ethernet).
Legacy fieldbus devices connect to modern OPC UA systems via protocol gateway devices, industrial computers or dedicated gateway hardware that run fieldbus masters (PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, CANopen) on one side and expose the data as OPC UA nodes on the other. Avalue industrial PCs with fieldbus PCIe expansion cards and OPC UA server software can serve as flexible multi-protocol gateways.
Yes, TSL Automation Solutions supplies Avalue industrial PCs with PCIe expansion slots for fieldbus cards (PROFIBUS, CANopen, EtherCAT master), enabling protocol gateway and edge computing applications with legacy fieldbus connectivity. Contact our Mumbai team for fieldbus integration requirements.
