The OEE Formula

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

  • Availability = (Planned production time − Downtime) ÷ Planned production time
  • Performance = (Actual output) ÷ (Theoretical maximum output at full speed)
  • Quality = (Good units produced) ÷ (Total units produced)

World-class OEE is considered 85%. Most Indian manufacturers operate at 50 a 65% OEE, meaning 35 a 50% of potential production capacity is being lost to downtime, slow running, and defects.

How to Measure OEE Automatically

OEE tracks six big losses: Availability losses, Equipment Failure (unplanned breakdowns) and Setup & Adjustment (planned stops for changeover). Performance losses, Idling & Minor Stops (small unplanned stoppages under 5 minutes) and Reduced Speed (running below rated speed). Quality losses, Process Defects (scrap and rework during production) and Reduced Yield (startup waste and defects at process start-up).
