Sommaire

The OEE Formula

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

  • Availability = (Planned production time − Downtime) ÷ Planned production time
  • Performance = (Actual output) ÷ (Theoretical maximum output at full speed)
  • Quality = (Good units produced) ÷ (Total units produced)

World-class OEE is considered 85%. Most Indian manufacturers operate at 50 à 65% OEE, meaning 35 à 50% of potential production capacity is being lost to downtime, slow running, and defects.

The Six Big Losses OEE Tracks

  • Breakdowns, unplanned equipment failures (Availability loss)
  • Setup and adjustments, changeovers, tooling changes (Availability loss)
  • Minor stops, brief jams, sensor faults under 10 minutes (Performance loss)
  • Reduced speed, running below designed cycle time (Performance loss)
  • Startup rejects, scrap during machine warm-up (Quality loss)
  • Production rejects, defective output during steady production (Quality loss)

How to Measure OEE Automatically

Manual OEE tracking using paper forms is inaccurate and labour-intensive. Automated OEE monitoring connects an industrial PC or IIoT gateway to machine PLCs, reads run/stop signals and production counts, and calculates OEE in real time on a SCADA or MES dashboard.

Avalue industrial PCs and Cermate HMIs from TSL Automation Solutions provide the data collection hardware for automated OEE monitoring systems. Contact us to discuss implementation.

Questions fréquentes

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a manufacturing KPI that measures how effectively a machine or production line is being used. OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. A perfect OEE of 100% means the machine runs all planned time (Availability), at maximum theoretical speed (Performance), with zero defects (Quality). World-class OEE is generally considered 85% for discrete manufacturing.
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. Availability = (Planned Production Time − Downtime) ÷ Planned Production Time. Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) ÷ Run Time. Quality = Good Count ÷ Total Count. Example: 90% Availability × 95% Performance × 99% Quality = 84.6% OEE. Each percentage point of OEE improvement on a ₹100 crore production line represents approximately ₹1 crore additional output annually.
Automated OEE tracking requires: machine run/stop status (from PLC digital output or sensor), production count (from part counter, vision sensor, or PLC counter register), ideal cycle time (configured in the OEE system), planned production schedule (shift patterns, planned stops), and defect/reject count (from quality inspection or operator input). An industrial PC or IoT gateway connects to the PLC via Modbus or OPC UA to read this data.
OEE tracks six big losses: Availability losses, Equipment Failure (unplanned breakdowns) and Setup & Adjustment (planned stops for changeover). Performance losses, Idling & Minor Stops (small unplanned stoppages under 5 minutes) and Reduced Speed (running below rated speed). Quality losses, Process Defects (scrap and rework during production) and Reduced Yield (startup waste and defects at process start-up).
Yes, TSL Automation Solutions supplies Avalue industrial PCs and IoT gateways that connect to PLCs via Modbus or OPC UA to collect machine status and production count data for OEE calculation. This data feeds SCADA or MES systems for real-time OEE dashboards. Contact our Mumbai team for OEE hardware and connectivity recommendations.
