What Does IP Rating Mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, defined by IEC standard 60529. An IP rating has two digits: the first indicates protection against solid particles (dust), the second against liquids (water).

IP (Ingress Protection) rating is an IEC 60529 standard that classifies the degree of protection an enclosure provides against solid particles (first digit, 0 tot 6) and liquids (second digit, 0 tot 9K). For example, IP65 means fully dustproof (6) and protected against water jets from any direction (5). No, IP rating only specifies protection against solid particle and liquid ingress. Operating temperature range is a separate specification. An IP65 device may only be rated for 0°C to 50°C operation, which would be inadequate for a cold storage facility.
