SCADA Workstation vs SCADA Server

A SCADA server collects data from PLCs, runs the SCADA application engine, hosts the historian database, and provides services to multiple clients. It requires higher CPU, more RAM, and fast storage. A SCADA operator workstation (or client) runs the HMI graphical interface, displays trends, and handles operator alarms, it needs a good display, reliable GPU, and fast response times rather than raw server power.

Size for at least 3 a 5 years of on-site storage with cloud archiving for long-term.

For critical processes (continuous manufacturing, power generation, water treatment), SCADA server redundancy is strongly recommended, with automatic failover between primary and standby servers in under 30 seconds. Redundancy is achieved with dedicated SCADA software redundancy (Ignition Redundancy, WinCC Redundancy) plus hardware redundancy (dual servers, redundant power supplies, dual LAN paths). For less critical batch or discrete manufacturing, single-server architecture with regular backups may be acceptable.
