SCADA Workstation vs SCADA Server

A SCADA server collects data from PLCs, runs the SCADA application engine, hosts the historian database, and provides services to multiple clients. It requires higher CPU, more RAM, and fast storage. A SCADA operator workstation (or client) runs the HMI graphical interface, displays trends, and handles operator alarms, it needs a good display, reliable GPU, and fast response times rather than raw server power.

SCADA Server Hardware Specification

  • Processor: Intel Core i7 or Xeon (for large tag counts >10,000)
  • RAM: 16 a 32 GB (Ignition recommends 16 GB minimum for production servers)
  • Storage: 512 GB NVMe SSD (OS + SCADA application) + 2 TB SSD (historian data); RAID 1 mirror for data protection
  • Network: Dual GbE, one for OT network (PLCs), one for IT/corporate network
  • OS: Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or Windows Server 2022 LTSC

SCADA Operator Station Specification

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (sufficient for most client applications)
  • RAM: 8 a 16 GB
  • Display: 21.5" or 24" industrial monitor, 1920×1080 minimum; dual-screen for larger process overviews
  • Touch: Optional PCAP touch for operator convenience
  • Form factor: Panel PC (with integrated display) or Box PC + external monitor

Critical Reliability Features

  • Fanless design (dust and vibration immunity)
  • Wide operating temperature (0°C, 60°C minimum)
  • Industrial-grade SSD (rated for 24/7 write workloads)
  • TPM 2.0 for BitLocker encryption
  • Watchdog timer for automatic recovery from OS hangs

Domande frequenti

A SCADA system requires: a SCADA server (industrial PC with sufficient RAM, fast NVMe storage, and redundant LAN ports), operator workstations (Panel PCs or industrial monitors with PCs for control room operator interaction), a historian server (industrial PC or NAS with large storage for long-term data), network infrastructure (industrial Ethernet switches with VLAN support), and communication interfaces to PLCs and RTUs (OPC UA server, Modbus TCP, PROFINET).
SCADA server RAM requirements depend on tag count and historian configuration: under 5,000 tags, 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended; 5,000 a 50,000 tags, 16 a 32GB; over 50,000 tags, 32 a 64GB. Historian databases with high-frequency logging (100ms scan rates on many tags) require more RAM for buffering. Always add 50% headroom above your current tag count for future expansion.
SCADA historian storage requires high reliability and adequate capacity: use industrial-grade NVMe SSDs for the OS and application, and high-capacity SATA SSDs or SAS drives (in RAID 1 or 5) for the historian database. Calculate historian storage: a 10,000-tag system at 1-second resolution generates approximately 100 a 500GB per year depending on compression. Size for at least 3 a 5 years of on-site storage with cloud archiving for long-term.
For critical processes (continuous manufacturing, power generation, water treatment), SCADA server redundancy is strongly recommended, with automatic failover between primary and standby servers in under 30 seconds. Redundancy is achieved with dedicated SCADA software redundancy (Ignition Redundancy, WinCC Redundancy) plus hardware redundancy (dual servers, redundant power supplies, dual LAN paths). For less critical batch or discrete manufacturing, single-server architecture with regular backups may be acceptable.
