What Is an SBC?

A Single Board Computer (SBC) integrates the processor, RAM, storage interfaces, and I/O onto a single printed circuit board. Unlike a desktop PC where these components are separate, an SBC combines everything into a compact, low-power package, ideal for embedded applications where space, power, and cost are constraints.

Industrial SBC vs Raspberry Pi

Consumer SBCs like Raspberry Pi are popular for prototyping but not suitable for industrial deployment. Industrial SBCs differ in critical ways:

  • Extended temperature, rated to −20°C to 70°C or −40°C to 85°C
  • Long-term availability, 5 à 10 year supply commitments, unlike consumer boards
  • Industrial I/O, COM ports, GPIO, CAN bus, LVDS displays
  • Vibration and shock ratings, IEC 60068 tested

An SBC (Single Board Computer) is a complete computer, processor, RAM, storage interface, and I/O, on a single PCB. In industrial computing, SBCs are used for OEM machine integration, IoT gateways, and edge computing nodes where a full PC chassis is too large. Industrial SBCs differ from consumer SBCs (Raspberry Pi) in their wide temperature ratings, long lifecycle guarantees, and industrial I/O options.

For applications requiring Windows industrial software (SCADA, MES, HMI tools), specify an x86-based industrial SBC.
COM Express (Computer-on-Module) separates the processor and memory onto a compact module that plugs into a customer-designed carrier board. This allows processor upgrades (to a newer generation module) without redesigning the carrier board containing all the custom I/O. For industrial OEMs designing custom machines, COM Express reduces long-term redesign costs when processor generations change.
