What Is an SBC?

A Single Board Computer (SBC) integrates the processor, RAM, storage interfaces, and I/O onto a single printed circuit board. Unlike a desktop PC where these components are separate, an SBC combines everything into a compact, low-power package — ideal for embedded applications where space, power, and cost are constraints.

Industrial SBC vs Raspberry Pi

Consumer SBCs like Raspberry Pi are popular for prototyping but not suitable for industrial deployment. Industrial SBCs differ in critical ways:

  • Extended temperature — rated to −20°C to 70°C or −40°C to 85°C
  • Long-term availability — 5–10 year supply commitments, unlike consumer boards
  • Industrial I/O — COM ports, GPIO, CAN bus, LVDS displays
  • Vibration and shock ratings — IEC 60068 tested
  • Wide voltage input — 9–36V DC, not 5V USB
