The IP69K test is not what people think it is

IP69K isn't simply "more IP65". It's a separate test method standardised in ISO 20653, originally developed for road-vehicle cleaning. The protocol: ~14 a 16 L/min of water at 80°C and 80 a 100 bar, sprayed from a flat-fan nozzle at 100 a 150 mm distance, at 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° angles for 30 seconds each. Pass that, and the enclosure has demonstrated it can survive high-pressure, hot-water, close-range washdown without ingress.

IP65, by contrast, is "protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction". Useful on a factory floor; not a substitute for IP69K when the cleaning crew turns up with a hot-water lance.

Where IP69K matters

  • Food & beverage production, daily caustic + hot-water washdown of every surface in zone 1
  • Meat, poultry, dairy, frequent high-pressure cleaning to meet HACCP / USDA / EU 2073/2005
  • Pharmaceutical clean / wash bays, washdown SOPs that go beyond IP65/66
  • Commercial kitchens, hosedown of cookware lines
  • Outdoor washdown, vehicle cleaning bays, agricultural processing

What changes on the PC itself

An IP69K-rated industrial PC isn't a sealed IP65 box with a sticker. The engineering changes show up everywhere:

  • Stainless-steel enclosure (typically 304 or 316L for food/pharma), no painted steel, no plastic seams in the washdown zone
  • True flush front bezel with no recessed buttons, badges or trims that trap water
  • Sealed connectors, M12 connectors instead of standard USB/RJ-45 for cabled installs, or fully sealed cable glands
  • Fanless cooling, fan slots are ingress points; IP69K builds are passively cooled
  • Sloped or radiused top surface, no flat horizontal surface for water to pool
  • Disinfection-compatible touch glass resistant to common cleaning chemicals

IP69K vs IP66 vs IP67, quick reference

  • IP66, protected against powerful jets of water (12.5 mm nozzle, ~100 L/min, 3 m distance, room-temperature)
  • IP67, protected against temporary immersion up to 1 m for 30 minutes
  • IP69K, protected against high-pressure, high-temperature close-range washdown (see test above)

A device can carry IP67 without surviving IP69K (cold immersion ≠ hot-water blast). For washdown specs, ask for IP69K specifically, not just "high IP rating".
