The physics in one paragraph

E Ink (e-paper) is a bistable display. Tiny charged pigment particles inside microcapsules move under an electric field to form an image, then stay in place when power is removed. That single fact — the image is retained without power — is the reason e-paper deployments look so different from LCD: a tag can run for years on a coin cell, a public-information panel only "wakes" when content changes, and a sun-facing kiosk reads like print rather than washing out.

Where e-paper beats LCD

  • Electronic shelf labels (ESL) — coin-cell battery, image retained between refreshes, deployed at store scale (the largest retail rollouts now run across whole estates).
  • Public-information panels — wayfinding, room booking, transit timetables, hospital signage. Content updates infrequently, so per-pixel power use is effectively zero.
  • Outdoor / sunlight-readable signage — reflective display, no backlight glare.
  • Quiet, fan-free environments — hospitals, libraries, museums.
  • E-note / digital paper — meeting-room note pads and reference panels where the device is read for hours.

Where LCD still wins

If you need fast video, frequent animation, full motion or a colour gamut close to a phone screen, LCD/OLED still wins on refresh rate and colour. Modern colour e-paper (e.g., E Ink Spectra 6 with six pigments — red, green, blue, yellow, black, white) covers signage colour well but is not a substitute for video.

How to scope an e-paper deployment

  1. Content frequency — how often does the screen actually need to update? E-paper shines when updates are minutes-to-days apart.
  2. Power source — battery, USB-C, PoE, mains? E-paper opens up battery-only deployments LCD can't touch.
  3. Size and resolution — ESL is sub-3" at one end; Avalue's EPD-3150 is a 31.5" 2560×1440 Spectra 6 colour signage display at the other.
  4. Connectivity — Wi-Fi or SD for signage updates; gateway-based RF for ESL.
  5. Environment — temperature range and IP rating for the install location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Charged pigment particles inside microcapsules move under an electric field to form an image. The image is bistable — it stays in place after power is removed — so the display only draws energy on refresh.
Typical electronic shelf-label tags last 5–10 years on a single coin-cell battery, because the panel only draws power on refresh, not while displaying an image.
Yes — modern colour e-paper (E Ink Spectra 6) uses six pigments (red, green, blue, yellow, black, white) and covers signage colour well, though it is not a video-rate display.
When content updates infrequently, the install is battery- or low-power-only, the environment is sunlit, or the location demands quiet/fanless operation — ESL, public information panels, wayfinding, hospital signage, outdoor transit signs.
Avalue's Digital Paper line covers public-display panels (e.g., EPD-3150 at 31.5" 2560×1440 Spectra 6, EPD-2530 at 25.3"), outdoor displays and eNote digital paper for meeting/reference use.
