What Is a Single Board Computer?

A single board computer (SBC) is a complete computer built on a single printed circuit board. Unlike a standard desktop PC — where the processor, memory, storage, and expansion cards are separate components connected via a motherboard — an SBC integrates all of these components onto one compact board. This makes SBCs ideal for embedded applications where space, power consumption, and reliability are critical.

Industrial SBCs are a different category from hobbyist boards like Raspberry Pi. They are designed for 24/7 industrial operation, with extended temperature ranges, longer product lifecycles (7–10 years), and certifications (CE, FCC, UL) required for commercial deployment.

Industrial SBC Form Factor Standards

Form FactorDimensionsTypical Use
3.5-inch SBC146 × 102 mmCompact embedded systems, HMI, kiosks
Pico-ITX100 × 72 mmUltra-compact embedded systems
EPIC165 × 115 mmEmbedded controllers, data acquisition
Mini-ITX170 × 170 mmIndustrial Box PCs, Panel PCs
Thin Mini-ITX170 × 170 mm (thinner)Slim Panel PCs, all-in-one systems
COM ExpressVaries (Type 6, Type 10)Modular systems with carrier board

Industrial SBC vs Standard PC: Key Differences

  • All-in-one integration — processor, chipset, RAM, storage interfaces, LAN, and I/O on one board eliminates connector reliability issues
  • Long lifecycle — 7–10 year production commitment vs 2–3 year for consumer boards
  • Wide temperature operation — industrial SBCs operate at -20°C to 70°C or wider vs 0°C to 40°C for consumer hardware
  • Serial ports — industrial SBCs typically include multiple RS-232/422/485 ports for PLC connectivity, which standard PCs omit
  • Industrial certifications — CE, FCC, and optional UL/IECEx
  • Fanless operation — most industrial SBCs support passive cooling

COM Express: Modular SBC Architecture

COM Express (Computer-on-Module) is a modular SBC standard where the processor and core logic sit on a small plug-in module, and the application-specific I/O is implemented on a separate carrier board. This architecture allows you to upgrade the processor module independently when newer processors become available, without redesigning the carrier board. It is widely used in medical devices, railway systems, and complex industrial machines.

When to Choose an SBC for Your Application

  • Space-constrained embedded system requiring a complete computer in minimal footprint
  • Custom machine build where the SBC will be integrated into a purpose-built enclosure
  • Applications requiring long product lifecycle with a consistent board design
  • System requiring specific I/O combinations not available in standard Box PC form factors
