IEC 60601-1 is the international standard for safety and essential performance of medical electrical equipment. Any computer used in patient care areas — bedside, operating theatre, diagnostic imaging — must be IEC 60601-1 certified. The key additional requirement over commercial IT equipment is leakage current — the current that can flow through a patient if they touch the device must be below a very low threshold (typically <100 microamperes) to prevent microshock in cardiac-sensitive patients.
Clinical devices are cleaned with hospital disinfectants — bleach solutions, isopropyl alcohol, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Medical Panel PCs must have sealed front panels (IP54 minimum) to prevent liquid ingress during cleaning, smooth surfaces with no crevices for bacterial harbourage, and material resistance to hospital disinfectants. Some Avalue medical Panel PCs include antimicrobial surface coatings.
Not all medical computing requires IEC 60601-1. Hospital IT infrastructure (nursing station PCs, pharmacy systems, radiology viewing stations away from patient contact) can use standard IEC 60950/62368 industrial PCs. Only patient-proximate equipment needs the full medical standard — consult with a regulatory expert to determine which standard applies to your device.
Our team in Mumbai can recommend the right HMI, Panel PC, or embedded system for your application.
